The 2011 Chili Festival POSTPONED TO SUNDAY 2/20!

The 13th Annual Great Downtown Ithaca Chili Cook-off & WinterFest is so close we can almost taste it! Come take part in this annual cure for the winter blahs down on the Ithaca Commons this Saturday, February 19th.

UPDATE: THE EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED!

Due to dangerous high wind warnings for gusts up to 60 mph for Saturday, organizers have re-scheduled the event for
Sunday, February 20th, 11:30 am to 4:00 pm.

We applaud the decision to keep people safe and keep chili festival fun. See you on Sunday!

It's the first big local food event of every year and 2011 is shaping up to be awesome.

We've already heard from organizers that they'll have 50 different chili recipes competing to be the best, including dozens of meat and vegetarian varieties, from over 30 restaurants.

If you want to sample these delicious chili varieties for yourself, you'll need to get yourself some Tasting Tickets:

Tickets to Taste are $5 for 5, $10 for 11, or VIP tickets are 10 for $20 (and you get a special VIP line at each booth). Each ticket gets you a 2-3oz sample of chili or a comparable sample of other items from wine to chocolate. Tickets are now available for advance purchase at Autumn Leaves Used Books, 115 The Commons; Collegetown Bagels, Downtown at 203 N. Aurora St; Collegetown Bagels, East Hill Plaza; Collegetown Bagels, Collegetown and at the Downtown Ithaca Alliance office in Center Ithaca. Buy yours now and skip the lines on Saturday!

And while Chili may be the main event, there will be plenty of other events going on all day to keep you warm and entertained until the judging is done - the Chili Idol Karaoke Contest, Guitar Hero competitions, plus lots of live music and live performers throughout the day. If you've never made it to the Chili Cook-Off before, listen to our past coverage of this event in Episode #3 of our podcast to get a good idea of what to expect. This year also brings the return of the new annual Chili Cook-Off Mustache Competition! Grow it, craft it or stick it on (ladies too!) and be spotted by the official Chili photographer for your chance at complimentary VIP chili tasting tickets and other prizes.

Click Here for a complete Schedule of Events and plan your day now. Events are scheduled from 11:30 am - 4:00 pm and the weather forecast looks sunny, so dress in layers, bring your friends and family and your favorite spoon, and get ready to enjoy some great eating from Ithaca's best chefs. You won't have another chance to sample this much food in one place... until next year!

Ep. 44: Operation Frontline and Coal House Cafe

Download MP3 | Subscribe to podcast via RSS | Subscribe via iTunes

In the excellent new "Food Issue" of the New York Times Magazine, the cover story on British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver follows his recent efforts to improve the eating and cooking habits of everyday Americans. It's an article worth reading, but it overlooks an important fact: there's already a nationwide organization doing that same thing, and they've been doing it for over 15 years.

For this episode, we're going behind the scenes with Operation Frontline, a part of Share Our Strength, whose mission is to end childhood hunger. Operation Frontline outreach programs aim to reconnect families with food and healthy eating through free cooking and nutrition classes. To see what they're doing in the Ithaca community, we'll talk with Julia Hastings-Black, program director for Operation Frontline with Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Edie Spaulding, who shares a personal story of how Operation Frontline classes changed the way her family cooks at home. Plus we have details on how to get your tickets to the Chef's Night Out Dinners, 3 dinners on 3 nights, each featuring 5 courses by 5 different chefs, all raising funds to support Operation Frontline. It's a special dining series not to be missed.

We're still eating our way through every Ithaca restaurant from A-Z, and looking back through the alphabet for new entries brings us to the Coal House Cafe, which is already improving on what its predecessor - Queen of Tarts - started. Hear our review plus the latest local food news and events in this episode.

Without a doubt, Gary Redmond is one of the most enthusiastic and passionate forces of the Finger Lakes food community we've ever met. His company, Regional Access, is celebrating its 20th year even as they continue to explore new ways of sharing the best foods of our region and beyond. Our interview with Gary is bound to get you thinking about just how much is possible for a sustainable future in New York.

We're also continuing to eat our way through every restaurant in Ithaca in alphabetical order, this time looking back to seek out the restaurants that have opened since our first pass through the letters A to H. In this episode, we're checking out the new vegan restaurant Food For the Planet on West Buffalo Street, which both surprised and disappointed us. Hear our review for the full story.

Plus we have lots of news on other new restaurants opening in the weeks to come, as well as the latest on upcoming events for local food lovers! Ep. 29 - Famous Guest Chefs Come to Ithaca

Download MP3 | Subscribe to podcast via RSS | Subscribe via iTunes

It's time for the 20th Annual Guest Chefs Dinner Series at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, and we're sharing the experience with you.

First is our interview with the first Guest Chef of 2009, Aida Mollenkamp. She's the popular host of "Ask Aida"on the Food Network and also the food editor at Chow.com, but she spent time in Ithaca earning her degree at the Cornell Hotel School. She was very excited to be back in town to share her enthusiasm for fresh regional cooking .

We also have a special dining review for this episode all about our experiences at the Guest Chef dinner with the James Beard Award-winning chef José Andrés. A master of combining the old-world flavors of Spain with modern avant guard techniques, his restaurants in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles have made him one of the most successful chefs in the country. It was an amazing dinner and you can see photos of every single dish and bottle of wine we were served on our Flickr page, along with notes and sources for some of the ingredients.

And as always, we've got news on upcoming food events and other updates from our listeners. If you want to get in touch or be part of a future episode, you may leave a comment on the blog, call our voicemail line anytime at 607-215-4392, or send an email to: feedback at eatingithaca dot com. Remember to follow us on Twitter for continuing updates throughout the week. Thanks for joining us!
